Our Story

There are few better ways to experience East Africa than through the eyes of Siruai’s guides: Mark Laurence and his life long Maasai friend Kaapen. Both of these remarkable men are Kenyan born and bred and their passion, knowledge and experience will bring your safari to life.

Mark

Mark, a professionally trained guide, lives with his family in Maasailand close to the Mara. He has a carefully chosen selection of thoroughbred / thoroughbred cross horses from both Kenya and Zimbabwe. The horses, being the most important part of your holiday, are well schooled and bush-wise and will bring you tangibly closer to every aspect of what surrounds you.

Mark grew up in Kenya, and his love for wildlife started with childhood bird-shooting safaris. Horses became his second passion when he took up the life as a jockey. He became champion Kenyan jockey before before trying his skills in the UK under the watchful eye of Josh Gifford. Becoming too heavy, Mark returned home to Kenya and has put both his love of wildlife and his talents with horses to good use. He now has 13 years experience in this special field.

Kapeen

There is something very special about accompanying Kapeen, with his amazing set of eyes either walking, or on a day or night game drive. Totally in his element in the bush, nothing escapes his attention, and his incredible understanding has been imbibed from growing up in Maasai country. Kapeen has spent his life in the Mara, and crossed paths with Mark early on. His family live not far from Mark's home, where they are part of a manyatta, making a living in the traditional way - tending cattle. Growing up looking after the herds was a perfect training for a tracker.
