Horseback Safaris

  • Choice of horses: Mark has a carefully chosen selection of thoroughbred / thoroughbred cross horses from both Kenya and Zimbabwe. The horses, being the most important part of your holiday, are well schooled and bush-wise and will bring you tangibly closer to every aspect of what surrounds you.
  • Game viewing: The length of time in the saddle on a typical day ranges from 4-6 hours. Although predominantly we are game viewing from the saddle, all our safaris are supported by highly comfortable custom-built Land Cruisers. Using the vehicles not only allows both the horse and rider a well earned rest, they also give us the opportunity to explore further, take photographs and go on night game drives. The nocturnal animals are the other half of the amazing and varied wildlife that we may see.
  • You will have constant access to the finest safari infrastructure in Africa. This support makes your adventure comfortable and safe. Our safari guides accompany our guests on all rides, walks and game drives. They are well trained in the use of firearms which is an added insurance that you will be well protected in the event of any unusual encounter with a dangerous animal.
  • Safety first - We are always in big game country, so all riders MUST be confident at all paces. We don’t take beginners in the saddle, though they are most welcome to be part of the whole safari using one of the Land Cruisers and Kapeen as your guide on the moving days. We make every effort to ensure groups are well matched and difficulties are explained as clearly as possible.
  • Exploring... Equestrian travel provides guests with a whole new way of seeing the environment and interacting with other cultures and peoples. Guests with common love of the horse and riding quickly form bonds of friendship with like-minded people from all over the world. Our small groups are able to explore wild places well off the beaten track where local villagers see visitors as a curiosity.
  • Horses and Tack: Thoroughbred and Thoroughbred cross horses which are polo schooled, 'bushwise' are fitted the very best Australian stock saddles or Argentine/British polo saddles.
  • Restrictions: Weight limit for riders is 220lbs or 100kgs.

Tanzania

Tanzania is the home of safaris. Visitors never cease to be amazed at the endless variety of landscapes, game reserves, national parks, mountains, volcanoes and to crown it all - the most beautiful coastline in Africa. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, Serengeti National Park hosts the greatest migration in the world, and Ngorongoro Crater with its 100 square mile crater floor supports the most diverse population of animals including the big five, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino. Lake Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa are filled with hundreds of fish species including Nile Perch, Tilapia and the magnificent tiger fish. This is a timeless land, with a largely undiscovered hinterland. The romantic spice islands with their rich mixture of Arabic, Indian, African and European cultures.

This peaceful nation with its stable democratic government and functioning constitution is an African success story. Tanzania has set aside more land for wildlife and supporting habitats than any other African country. The one certainty in Tanzania is that there will always be more for you to discover than time allows. It is the one African country that has something for everyone. Children play a special part in the hearts of Tanzanians and once a child has been to Tanzania they will always remember the local people with great affection and the many adventures clearly imprinted on their enquiring minds.

Tanzania is still wonderfully wild and remote, with great swaths of land inaccessible to vehicle travel. The variety of landscapes, colors, geological formations and vegetation in Tanzania; over every ridge, it seems, is a new scene. There are regular flights into Kilimanjaro from Amsterdam and into Dar Es Salaam from London, Zurich and South Africa.

Camp Staff

The camps are fully staffed with highly trained, cooks, waiters, tent attendants, drivers and game scouts. By the end of your safari, you and your camp staff will have become friends, and you will wonder how you will ever manage again without them. Laundry is done on every non-moving day.

Dining

You will be amazed at the consistently high levels of delicious food that your safari cook produces for every meal. Most guests are still surprised by what can be produced in a camp kitchen.

Breakfast is usually eaten in camp. Although, if you are walking with your guide in the early morning, you will experience a memorable moment when you come into a remote clearing in the bush to find your camp cook already there preparing a hearty English breakfast.

Lunch might be a delicious picnic on a hill overlooking the wildebeest migration or by the side of a river.

A full bar travels with you with imported spirits, excellent South African wines and first class local beers and sodas. Whilst in our private camps all drinks, with the exception of Champagne, are included in the cost of your safari. Bottled water and ice are provided.
